When the Silence Spoke

Dr. Omatee Ann Marie Hansraj (Trinidad and Tobago)

Today in reflection,
As I recall so many years ago,
My life changed forever—
Now a widow, now a single parent,
My kids lost their father,
No one to call "Daddy" anymore.

Hearts broken, tears endlessly flow,
A husband so dear,
Now walking a different path,
And I—on my own—
With a hollow space in my heart
No one truly understands.

So many things still left to do,
So many dreams unfulfilled,
So many words remained unspoken,
So many memories we never got to make.
But here I stand—
On a path that few can understand.

I recall the day so clearly,
When the doctor said,
"Take him home… let him rest in peace.
There is nothing more we can do."
We stared back, speechless,
Refusing to believe those words.

With every ounce of hope,
I called doctors far and near,
Nursing homes, hospitals—
Locally and beyond—
Clinging to a hope that refused to die,
Still doubting what the doctor said.

But you grew weaker,
Your body quiet and still,
No strength, no voice,
Just silence…
You were still with us,
But
