Poem - Mother Nature`s Hand

Mother Nature's Hand
Abeera Mirza (Pakistan)

Whenever I see a violent storm
Like a tornado or hurricane,
Or the waves of a tsunami
The wind, the floods and rain.

The destruction they bring about
The death and injuries they produce,
The work and labor now required
Since Mother Nature just let loose.

If not the wet and cold which comes
Then the fires and hot lava flows,
The burning of homes and businesses
The mountain sides aglow.

Consequences of natural acts
From lightening, winds and rain,
It shows how vulnerable man is
When we experience nature's reign.

And when we ponder the power
And the might of such events,
We realize the reality of such
And who directs the elements.

We realize how tremendous are
The elements when they obey,
How true to their nature they become
God commands their natural ways.

The combination of certain molecules
When combined, a fire they make,
The forces of lands against one another
Produces powerful shocks and earthquakes.

The combination of gases produce water
We simply call it H2O,
It can expand, it can heat and even freeze
When freezing its called sleet or snow.

It can change the conditions drastically
Whether on water, land or trees,
The earth changes from autumn colors
To snow white without a breeze.

When moved however by prevailing winds
Snow storms and blizzards occur,
Avalanches also from mountain sides
With changes in temperature.

Mud slides then in the warming Spring
After fires have scorched the land,
Again, a reminder how vulnerable we are
Under the conditions of nature's hand.

We try to defend the best we can
Against nature's heavy hand,
And then realize how vulnerable we are
And how weak are the ways of man.

For after floods, man rebuilds
After fires, it's the same,
After earthquakes, we start again
We keep playing the same old game.

We don't move to higher ground
The waters which flood, to flee,
We don't clear the timbers and brush
Before fires burn all the trees.

We don't relocate to a different place
When an earthquake shakes the ground,
We always stay put and rebuild again
We don't like to move around.

We love the areas in which we live
And we know nature is always there,
And allows us to bask on the beach
Or breathe in the mountain air.

We endure the forces of nature's hand
Earths natural ways the elements play,
We enjoy the lighter side of her
When we have sunshine and brighter days.

Mother Nature has a very gentle side
Which will lull you fast asleep,
She loves to flaunt her colors and ways
We gasp, we enjoy and we weep.

She also has a temper to match
The wilder side of her,
Destruction is her weapon of choice
If her wrath you should incur.

But man is very resilient at best
And can withstand Mother Nature's ire,
And we will continue to build again
Whether from floods or winds or fire.
